South Sudan accumulated inflation of 661.3% last year

Juba - The inflation in South Sudan between July 2015 and last month reached 661.3% with a large increase in commodity prices and a depreciation of the local currency, reported on Tuesday the authorities.

According to the annual government Central Statistics Department report, inflation in the capital, Juba, recorded 410.8%.

The prices of basic goods increased last year about 80% due to the retreat of the South Sudanese Pound against the dollar, which is situated a change seven pounds.

South Sudan's Central Bank adopted in December the decision to release the price of the national currency against the dollar.

This measure was taken because of the decrease in production of South Sudanese oil and the reduction of oil prices in international markets.

The economic situation of South Sudan was sorely tried by the conflict afflicting the country since the end of December 2013, after the South Sudanese President Salva Kiir, denounced an attempted coup by his then deputy President Riek Machar.

Although both groups signed a peace agreement in August 2015, Machar briefly occupied the vice-presidency, since after that return to occur fighting in Juba last month took refuge in unknown whereabouts.
