Leaders with an iron fist threatening world trade, says IMF

A diretora-gerente do Fundo Monetário Internacional (FMI) Christine Lagarde participa de coletiva de imprensa, em Washington, DC

The managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde, said on Tuesday that politicians who make campaigns protectionist promises and economic barriers threaten world trade.

"There is a growing risk of politicians seeking a position with the promise of 'iron hand' with foreign trade partners through punitive tariffs or other restrictions on the exchange (trade)," Lagarde said.

Both the Republican candidate for president of the United States Donald Trump and his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton have announced their opposition to the transpacific free trade agreement (TPP) signed by Obama and that needs to be ratified by Congress.

Trump has proposed taxing Chinese goods and denounced the US free-trade agreement with Mexico and Canada.

Not to mention a particular political, Lagarde described an adverse climate for trade and noted that the growth rate of world trade remains at 2%.

"Recent reports on multilateral trade negotiations have been quite daunting," Lagarde said.

She added that trade reforms could gain momentum "if its benefits are properly explained."

Trade, said, generates most competitive industries, more innovation and lower prices for consumers.
